This inverted roof architecture reminds us of a bird taking flight – only fitting, in these wonderful woody surroundings on Lake Anna, Virginia. This small guest house was designed by Washington-based architect Robert M. Gurney, who’s simple materials and construction methods, and inspired ideas come together in perfect harmony. A rusted corrugated-metal facade is humble, but stands out for its unconventionality. And we love the ever-present combination of raw and refined in this unusual house plan. Inside, exposed plywood walls meet ceramic tile floors and a chic fireplace feature – the focal point on this open concept home. The V-shaped inverted roof also dictates the irregular shape of the interiors, with ceilings angles upward. Rectangular windows of different proportions flood interiors with natural light and views, while adding visual interest. Robert M. Gurney
