This modern eco architecture designed by eco architect Mickey Muennig stands out at Copper Point, Big Sur – but barely. Built into the lush landscape overlooking the California coastline, this innovative, sustainable home literally blends into its surroundings, with only strategically placed doors and windows peeking out from beneath its sod roof. With the environment top of mind, Muennig consulted with archaeological, geological and botanical experts before breaking ground, and again when seeding the roof with native grasses and wildflowers. Apart from looking really cool, this six- to eight-inch sod roof insulates the house to reduce energy consumption by half, according to the residents. And while on the subject of power, the home’s off-the-grid system relies on solar power to bring it a-buzz. Mickey Muennig
