This rooftop deck house design in Michigan City was created by John DeSalvo as a weekend retreat for a couple looking to escape busy Chicago life. Measuring 1,200 sq. ft. across three levels, what this compact house lacks in square footage it more than makes up for with its cool factor – the rooftop deck. The owners wanted a modern and eco-sustainable home, and thus the Church-Jett Residence is an urban retreat of outdoor entertaining areas, contemporary aesthetics and clean interior design. The vertical house maximizes the home’s area upward, while its bold silhouette is softened with sail-inspired sunshades sheltering the rooftop outdoor living room, complete with a sitting/lounging area and hot tub. Interiors have an enhanced sense of space with a two-storey living area encircled by an open upper walkway, and an open concept house plan that is bright and open with an unobstructed flow.
