Located on Polrovsky Boulevard in the historical centre of Moscow, the interior space of this apartment received a fresh and cozy makeover by Nikolashin Alex and Catherine Emelyanova of Architecst SL *project. The living, dining and kitchen are all within an open concept area, with the grey-washed flat panel kitchen punctuating the far wall. 2 identical buffets in a brushed brass line the wall adjacent to the kitchen creating a dramatic art deco focal point in an otherwise modern interior. The ambient lighting glows from its recessed alcove in the dropped perimeter ceiling.
Although the apartment is designed to incorporate artificial lighting as a feature, it is flooded with natural light during the day. The floor to ceiling windows run the length of the apartment and custom draperies in a dark cobblestone colour create a large geometrical repeat pattern.
During the day, the apartment is light, bright and comfortable. The neutral palette is kept interesting by the use of large sections of each tone on tone. The grey expanse of the kitchen cabinets, the two brass buffets, the grey upholstered dining room chairs, the off white linen couch and the white washed plank flooring are all large sections of varying shades of neutrals creating a colour block effect – without the use of colour.
The dining area features a marble top table and a modern crystal chandelier. Surrounded by the kitchen, brass buffets and couch, the space is small but appears large. This is accomplished by the tone on tone colour scheme that keeps the focus on the table and the brass buffets. The kitchen and couch seem to fade away into the distance. When the chandelier is on, a dazzling display of shadows creates an intimate setting.
The dining table incorporates a base of 4 legs joined with a centre base for added weight distribution to the heavy marble top. The legs on the chairs are the same ebony stain as the table base and their spayed profile is a nod to Scandinavian design. The punctuation of the crystal chandelier plays off of the brass sheen on the buffets.
The one wall Galley Kitchen is flooded with light from the windows as well as the pot lights in the dropped perimeter ceiling. The lines are kept clean with an under mount sink and a drop in radiant, black glass cook top. When additional counter space is needed, the marble dining table is just a few feet away
Two ovens are mounted side by side at counter level in the 8′ for easy access.
An pathway is left open from the kitchen through the living area and all the way down to the far end of the apartment. This helps keep the home feeling spacious and uncluttered. In the living area a media centre is encased in a floor to ceiling Black Walnut cabinet. Just past the brass buffets is a hallway that leads to the entrance.
The entrance to the apartment features a playfull bubble chandelier surrounded by the same dropped perimeter ceiling detail as in the rest of the common areas. A long white bench offers a place to sit and a large wide framed mirror leans casually against the wall. A bank of high gloss cabinets line the end wall while an orchard adds a touch of elegance.
Just off of the entry hall is a powder room for guests. A contemporary oval pedestal sink with a wall mounted tap is featured against a mosaic tile backdrop. Above the mosaic half wall is a narrow counter and a wall of mirror.
The Master Bedroom is located behind the living room media wall. The wall to wall windows continues in this room with the same drapery detail. The wall opposite the window wall is the division to the Master ensuite. Here, to allow as much natural light as possible, the walls are a clear glass. The wall opposite the bed is a dark slate grey with a flat screen TV mounted on the wall just above a long bureau. The bedside lamp bases repeat the bubble effect of the hallway chandelier.
The bed incorporates a tall headboard upholstered in a charcoal grey leather. The bedside tables are matching ovals in a dark ebony stain. The bed linens are kept to soft greys for a muted and relaxing colour scheme.
While the bedroom is kept soft and muted, the ensuite is full of dramatic effect. The gold patterned wall paper is a nod to the art deco brass buffets in the dining area. The white chandelier is less delicate then the others but plays off of the modern white fixtures below. The free standing tub is a clean lined contemporary curvaceous oval while the vanity is blocky and square. The floor to ceiling cabinets maximizes storage and the large mirror expanse maximizes light reflection. Here, too, the dropped perimeter ceiling brings in additional pot lights and ambient cove lighting.
