Look at the images and you will agree that this is a home with a dual personality; the style contrast in the interior design is striking and curious. This 300 year old structure was redesigned by Materia Arquitectonica in 2011. The goal was to create an open living plan with living modules that would define different functions within the household. They wanted a contemporary home, but at the same time, staying true to the origins of the home – historically in Portuguese style. Immediately noticeable is the use of wood and that amazing ceiling. The ceiling actually serves to provide a sense of continuity in the space and is the same throughout the entire home. The concept of for the living modules is modern enough in itself and the execution supports this contemporary style. But the you also get totally surprised by these ancient granite walls and curvy corridors, that take you back through time. The contrasting styles speak very loudly in this home – not something you see everyday.
