In search of a modern coastal house with equal opportunity for sun, shade and the coastal breeze, the Waimarama House offers all that, and more. Situated in Waimarama, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, this modern family residence designed by Herriot + Melhuish Architecture makes the most of its magnificent beachside setting by incorporating large outdoor living areas into the design. Expansive windows let the outdoors in. The main volume of this house is a two-storey “crate” clad in natural oiled cedar weatherboards, painted plywood and weathered zinc, which serve to connect the house to nature, while differentiating it from its more traditional neighbors. A white, single-storey bedroom wing separates from the main volume of the house, creating a private haven overlooking the pool outside. The home’s four bedrooms, a studio and a study offer an ideal balance between live, work and play. Herriot + Melhuish Architecture
