Quarry House in Melbourne, Australia is a 1880s Victorian terrace home that got a cool modern extension by Hook Turn Architecture. From the street it still looks like a historic building, but from the rear, it’s a whole different world.
Rhomboid grey zinc-faced composite panels create an unusual pattern when layered and left unfinished. To continue with the indoor/outdoor theme, the extension features a huge window nested within the extension. Inside the peculiar cube on the higher level there is a contemporary bedroom.
The lower level of extension that houses an open living area and kitchen was built out of brick to match the original structure. It opens up to the backyard with folding metal-framed glass doors. To organically incorporate the eye catchy panels into the yard, the architects covered the immediate area with same tiles.
Thanks to an inner courtyard, both the bathroom and dining room get their portion of natural light and views. It may not be big, but there is enough space for a small patio table and few chairs.
Interiors are mostly modernist but sleek. This gives them an overall contemporary feel. Minimal built-in kitchen cabinets balance out the rounded furnishings. A smooth double bathroom vanity looks current. A second bath is worth noting thanks to its monochromatic patterned design.
The backyard doesn’t look like much, but a built-in angular wooden bench invites to go out and breathe in. Certainly, the top extension part is made to surprise and decorate.
